F. Scott Fitzgerald writes a novel , The Great Gatsby, as a critque for the "American Dream" that went on during the 1920's. He focus's on an individual that recently moves to New York where all the action happens.
Nick Carraway, the narrator of this story, has recently moved to Long Island, in the summer of 1922, in an area called West Egg to achieve his goals in the business world. He rents a house in the middle of two mansions (one being the Gatsby Mansion). Having graduated from Yale, he has many connections with East Egg, a more aristocratic area compared to West Egg. He then drives out to East Egg to have a lovely dinner with his cousin Daisy Buchanan, her husband Tom and her friend Jordan, who is a golfer. . Drama quitely arises when Tom recieves a phone call from a lover from another place and dinner becomes slightly awkward. Jordan claims she is to go to be because she has a tournament the next day. Before Nick leaves Daisy and Tom believe he should start a love interest for Jordan. Nick comes back home to his home in West Egg and sees a man outside at one of the mansions he lives next door to who is to be Gatsby, later recognized throughout the story.
Nick goes along with Tom to the city on a train and they stop and go to one of Tom's friends, Wilson, whose wife is Myrtle, a.k.a. Tom's lover. Tom begins to taunt Wilson and "orders" Myrtle to join him and Nick to the city. They arrive at a set of apartments called Morningside Heights where Tom keeps his affair. They throw a party for a couple named the Mckee's and Myrtles sister Catherine. Nick heres for the first time of who Jay Gatsby but nothing else really comes of it. At the this party everyone had become so drunk Nick thought the behavior as repulsive and tries to leave but just can't escape. Myrtle, who obviously had to much to drink, begins to yell Daisy's name and Tom gets upset and tells her to stop. She doesn't Tom shuts her up by punching her and breaking her nose. The party abruptly ends and Nick finds himself quite drunk and takes the 4 A.M. train all the way back to Long Island.
Finally, we are introduced to the highly talked about Gatsby. Everyone knows who he is for his luxurious parties he holds at his house every weekend. . Nick recieves an invite to one of these parties for that weekemd. Because he lives so close he makes the short walk to the Gatsby mansion and marvels over the beauty of his household. Throughout the party, Nick is actually with Jordan and they set out to look for the host, Gatsby. At first they are unsuccessful and finally go out back for some entertainment. They sit at a table with a young man and turns out to be none other than Jay Gatsby. Nick observes that while the other guests are out drinking, Jay sits back and doesnt drink a sip of alcohol and watchs the party from the sidlines. Nick begins to explain that after this party he not only goes out to party, but works in New York. He also has decided to meet other women but finally takes Tom and Daisy's advice and begins a love interest for Jordan.
